Wales manager Rob Page has told golf-crazy Gareth Bale that the sport is off-limits during the nation’s World Cup camp in Qatar. The mid-season tournament in Qatar will demand a much-more congested schedule, leaving little time for leisure while the Dragons are there to ‘do a job’.
Wales will be hopeful of progressing from Group B, which also features England, Iran and the United States. One of Qatar, Ecuador, Senegal or the Netherlands from Group A will await in the round of 16, should Page guide the nation beyond the first phase.
And he is all business heading into his second major tournament as manager, claiming there will be no time for Bale to hit the golf course. The amount of daylight in Qatar poses one issue, but the primary dilemma is the fact Wales will play their three group games within a nine-day period.
Page said: “We had a round of golf planned. I went to the Doha club; it’s run by a British lad. He said, ‘I’ll book you a time’. But it gets dark at four o’clock. We looked at it, but there are other functions we might have to do, so we will probably not get the chance to do it. Yeah [I’ve told Bale]. There’s no golf. We’re out there to do a job.

“In the past, I may get Gareth, Kieffer Moore or Aaron Ramsey come up to me and say, ‘What’s the plan for tomorrow afternoon? Are there meetings?’ I’d say, ‘No, there are no meetings, so if you want nine holes, then go and play’. But that is when you have a week building up to a double-header. Out there, we won’t have enough time. Every four days, there is a game. It’s relentless.”
Bale will be fresh and ready to make an impact in what could be his final international tournament. The 33-year-old forward ended his domestic season last Saturday, helping Los Angeles FC to the first MLS Cup in their short history after his free transfer from Real Madrid in July.

He astonishingly netted a 128th-minute header to equalise against Philadelphia Union in the final after LAFC fell 3-2 behind four minutes earlier. They went on to win 3-0 on penalties, sending Bale into the World Cup with momentum.
Wales launch their first World Cup campaign since 1958 against the United States in Al Rayyan on November 21 before facing Iran and ending their Group B run with a potentially decisive clash against England.
