Forgotten Man Utd star Januzaj joins Ozil in Turkey with career slipping away

Forgotten Manchester United prodigy Adnan Januzaj has joined Mesut Ozil at Istanbul Basaksehir for the rest of the season.

The Belgian international, now 27, burst onto the scene on his full Man Utd debut, netting twice in a 2-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light but failed to recapture his early form once David Moyes was axed from the Old Trafford hot seat.

He was loaned to Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland before leaving permanently in July 2017 to join Real Sociedad. After 15 goals in 132 appearances, he left the Basque-based club on a free transfer to link up with La Liga rivals Sevilla, where he penned a four-year contract.

After making just one league start – a 1-0 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano – Januzaj has now headed east on a short-term loan deal, uniting with another washed-up ex-Premier League ace in Mesut Ozil.

The former Arsenal playmaker registered an incredible 54 assists during his seven-and-a-half-year stint in north London before he was frozen out by Mikel Arteta and omitted from the Gunners' 25-man Premier League squad.

Despite a prolific first season back in Turkey at Fenerbahce, similar concerns regarding professionalism re-emerged and Ozil in March 2022 Ozil was excluded from the squad for the rest of the season.

Amid rumours he would turn to e-sports, the German instead made the move across the capital to Istanbul Basaksehir and he has since made three appearances after returning from a back problem.

New team-mates Ozil and Januzaj could be announced in the same line-up for the first time on February 11 when Istanbul make the trip to Alanyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

The club currently sit third in the table, behind city rivals Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, and are potential opponents for West Ham United in the last 16 of the Europa Conference League.
