Horrific footage shows the moment a group of football thugs attacked rival supporters in a pub in Carlisle.

Drinkers watched on in shock as nine men battered each other with pool balls, pool cues and beer glasses at Gallagher’s Irish bar in the centre of the city. The incident involved Celtic and Hibernian fans and occurred back October 2021.

It's understood the group of Hibs supporters had met up with some Oldham Athletic fans, who had travelled to the border town to see their side in action against Carlisle United. Three of them walked into Gallagher's and encountered six Celtic fans, and violence quickly ensued.

CCTV footage from inside the pub shows individuals hurling snooker balls at each other, and one man was seen launching a chair across the room. Punches then started flying as the brawl spilled out into the corridor towards the exit of the building.

The nine hooligans were sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court on Friday for football-related disorder. Seven of the fans were jailed for between seven-and-a-half months and 13 months, with two given suspended sentences. They were also handed football banning orders totalling 60 years.

Speaking about the incident, police inspector Kim Brown said: "The men involved in this incident acted with complete disregard to safety of other people within the pub and the surrounding area. Given the level of violence used, it is only by fortune that nobody was seriously injured.

"All nine men involved affiliated themselves as supporters of two football clubs and engaged in such mindless, violent activity. Our officers were quick to intervene and made a number of arrests at the scene. Following an investigation, we were able to identify the other individuals involved and bring them before the court.

"I do hope that this sends a clear message to anyone who believes they can act in such a manner, that such disorder will not be tolerated in our county. We have strong working relationships with other police forces, and we will work together to identify and prosecute those who engage in football-related disorder."
