Football news LIVE – Ferguson wants Man Utd role, Pochettino approach

Manchester United may have their best yet since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement to challenge for the Premier League title and the managerial legend is thought to be keen on playing some part in helping Erik ten Hag keep things on track. The pair met for dinner to discuss the Red Devils ahead of their clash with Barcelona, and it is understood the Scot wants to help Ten Hag in the club’s affairs this season after a positive meeting with the Dutchman.

But things are not so rosy with Liverpool, who are facing awkward questions over their head coach Jurgen Klopp after their heavy defeat to Real Madrid left their Champions League hopes in tatters, with Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy beginning the inquest into their 5-2 loss.

Elsewhere, speculation continues over the future of Graham Potter as Chelsea boss, with Mauricio Pochettino increasingly emerging as the hot favourite to take over if the 48-year-old is sacked. The Blues are struggling down in 10th place in the Premier League, and Sunday’s derby against Tottenham could be crucial to deciding his future.

Liverpool need to sign defenders and midfielders this summer after their dismal display in the 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid, according to Jamie Carragher and Danny Murphy.

Jurgen Klopp’s side took a 2-0 lead at Anfield before collapsing defensively, conceding five goals to Madrid, and most seemed avoidable as their Champions League hopes have gone up in smoke.

Carragher pointed to where Liverpool need to improve, insisting midfielders may not be enough after some nightmare performances, while Murphy

“Some of the players therE,” Carragher said on beIN Sports. “Joe Gomez tonight, we’ve all had bad nights as players and maybe I shouldn’t kick someone when they’re down because I’m sure he’ll feel terrible. But we keep talking about midfield players Liverpool need – and that’s right – I think Liverpool need defenders as well.”

Murphy added, speaking to talkSPORT: “So some of them are definitely going to go, maybe a new centre-half, Matip has been there seven or eight years. Matip has been great by the way, it’s not a criticism of him, but there’s a time where the squad has to evolve.”
