Feyenoord star caught in tug-of-war after ‘call-ups’ from Italy and Argentina

Feyenoord star Marcos Senesi is stuck in an international tug-of-war between Italy and Argentina with both sides set to face off next month.

The 25-year-old is eligible for both countries but has yet to make a single cap for either of them despite interest from both sides. And he now has a decision to make after being called up to the Italy squad by manager Roberto Mancini.

However, the defender would rather play for the country of his birth – Argentina. However, he also has Italian descent ahead of the 2022 Finalissima – the third edition of its kind that pits the South American and European champions against each other.

This year's clash will go ahead at Wembley on 1 June – a year after Italy's success over England at the European Championships. In the same summer, Lionel Messi finally ended his international trophy hoodoo when Angel di Maria scored the only goal to down Brazil at the Maracana last July.

And Senesi is now the belle of the ball with both Italy and Argentina desperate to tie him down to their respective countries. It would be the first time that a player has been called up to the same match for two different nations, if Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni makes the call.

The centre-back has had a fine year with Feyenoord and has been a rock at the back during their domestic and European campaign. He has made 47 appearances in total this season, eve getting on the scoresheet three times.

His impact has made a big impression on manager Arne Slot, who has even handed him the captain's armband over the past few weeks. Feyenoord are third in the Eredivisie behind Ajax and PSV Eindhoven.

But their real glory comes later this month when they face AS Roma in the first-ever Europa Conference League final. Jose Mourinho will be looking to pit his side against the Dutch outfit in a match that is too close to call.
