Ferguson opens up on Man Utd transfer business he failed to complete
Sir Alex Ferguson has opened up over a piece of business at Manchester United that he failed to complete.
The Scotsman is famous for pulling off some of the most remarkable transfers in the Premier League, including Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand.
Many players grew under Fergie's tutelage and went on to have legendary careers in the game.
But there are also a long list of stars who ignored his pursuits, such as Alan Shearer, John Terry and Paul Gascoigne.
However, as United prepare to take on Roma in the Europa League semi-final this Thursday – another player can now be added to those mentioned after Ferguson spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport.
According to the man himself, he revealed how United were knocked back in their advances of Francesco Totti, who only ever played for the Serie A outfit.
When asked about the Roma legend, he said: “We liked the player and we would have liked to include him in our script.
"But when we expressed out interest, it was immediately clear that Totti did not want to leave Rome.
"He was deeply attached to his city.
"After all, his CV is clear: Totti only wore the Roma shirt in his career”.
Totti made 786 appearances for Roma and is heralded as their best-ever player before retiring in 2017, a career that spanned 25 years.
Fergie's interview comes as the two European sides come head to head for the first time since United played Roma in the Champions League in 2007.
On that occasion, the Red Devils famously thrashed the Giallorossi 7-1 in the first leg, though they would go on to be knocked out by AC Milan in the semi-finals.
United have a chance of European glory this year when they take on Roma tomorrow night.
If they emerge victorious over two legs, they will face either Arsenal or Villarreal in the final.
