Manchester United have “expressly” asked Real Madrid to keep them updated with Raphael Varane’s contract situation ahead of a possible summer transfer, according to reports. Varane is out of contract at Real at the end of next season.

United are keen on signing the France World Cup winner to partner him with captain Harry Maguire.

Earlier this week Varane gave an update on his future, hinting a decision has already been made.

“My future is clear,” Varane said. “I am focused on the end of this season. We are in a very intense and key moment.”

And it appears the 27-year-old’s time at the Bernabeu may be coming to an end.

Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window podcast says Real will not give Varane the contract terms he is asking for, as United keep abreast of the situation.

McGarry said: “I was speaking to a friend and contact at Real Madrid [on Monday] and asking about Raphael Varane and his situation at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It seems that, at 27, they’re not willing to give him the contract he is asking for, which is substantial in terms of payment, even though obviously they will have to replace Sergio Ramos sooner rather than later.

“He told me that Manchester United had expressly said they wanted to be kept up to date with that status in Varane’s future.”

Despite the interest in Varane, United extended the contract of centre-back Eric Bailly earlier this week.

Bailly has seen his United career littered with injuries but he was delighted to put pen to paper on a new deal.

He told the United website: “I’m very happy. This decision is something I didn’t have to think about, I love this club and I love playing for Manchester United.

“I’m happy and so are my family, everything is good. Now the moment with my injury has passed and I’m fit and feel good, and that’s it.

“A new contract is like a new challenge and I’m ready for this.

“The new contract shows the group has confidence in me – the coach, the staff and the players and, for me, that is very important.

“And that’s why I made this decision to stay at the club.

“I hope I can be ready and I don’t get any injuries and to be strong and finish the season well.

“I hope to win the Europa League this season. We will have more challenges next season – hopefully the Champions League – and, for me, my dream is to win the Premier League, that’s my big dream.”
