Everton’s forgotten £25million signing leaves on loan after just 8 appearances

Everton have agreed to let £25million man Jean-Philippe Gbamin to join Turkish giants Trabzonspor on loan.

The Ivory Coast midfielder is the second player to be allowed to move to the Turkish division by Frank Lampard in a matter of days. Dele Alli was recently given a rapturous welcome in Turkey, after sealing a loan move to Besiktas.

However, Gbamin’s Goodison Park tale has been even more unfortunate than the former Tottenham Hotspur man, as the midfielder has been cursed by injuries from the moment he was signed by Marco Silva. And the loan move to Trabzonspor all but closes his frustrating and painful time at Everton.

Trabzonspor confirmed the signing of the 26-year-old, who was sent on loan to CSKA Moscow last season. He made 11 appearances, contributing two goals and two assists in the Russian Premier League.

Gbamin made the move across Europe in last season’s January transfer window. His Everton future was made crystal clear, when then manager Rafael Benitez snubbed Gbamin and opted to bring 18-year-old youngster on from the bench when the Toffees were losing to Manchester City.

At the time, Everton were suffering an injury crisis in midfield. Yet Gbamin, who had regained fitness at the time, was completely ignored by the former Liverpool boss.

And his move to Trabzonspor has all but ended any hope he has off rejuvenating his Everton career. His contract with the Merseysiders expires next summer, when his temporary move to the Turkish side will end.

It is a frustrating and disappointing end for Gbamin, who will surely have to be phenomenal in Turkey if he is to jostle himself into Frank Lampard’s thoughts. He was signed from Mainz by Silva for £25m in the summer of 2019. Unfortunately, he has only made eight appearances for Everton since his arrival.

While Gbamin did start promisingly at Everton, a lengthy hamstring injury was soon followed by a rupture Achilles tendon, consigning him to a season on the sidelines.
