Charles Leclerc branded ‘unreliable driver’ after Belgian GP crash

Charles Leclerc has been branded an “unreliable driver” as his crash-strewn season continued at the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Ferrari driver, who has fallen 80 points behind championship leader Max Verstappen, has seen his title challenge collapse amid errors by both himself and his team. Leclerc has suffered a number of crashes in qualifying and races, most costly while leading the French Grand Prix before the summer break.

The season has resumed in Belgium with Leclerc suffering an early blow after being hit with a grid penalty. As a result, qualifying will be virtually immaterial for the Monegasque driver. However, that didn’t stop him from pushing to the limit during the final practice session at Spa, which resulted in a high-speed spin and a brush with the barriers, causing front wing damage.

While the incident should not be costly to Leclerc’s weekend as a whole, it was another reminder of his habit of making mistakes. Sky Sports pundit and former F1 driver Anthony Davidson is a big fan of Leclerc’s but said on commentary he must limit his errors if he wants to realise his dream of becoming a world champion.

“He’s a brilliant driver, he’s super quick, but he’s an unreliable driver in many ways,” said Davidson. “If you’re team boss taking someone like that on, it comes with vulnerability. And if you want to win a championship, you cannot make errors like this.

Does Charles Leclerc make too many mistakes? Have your say in the comments section below.

“It’s happened in qualifying, it’s happened in races. It doesn’t matter if it’s once, even twice a year, but it’s a frequent thing. For someone like Max Verstappen, it’s less so, more so in this early years.

“It’s frustrating viewing because he has so much potential, he’s so exciting to watch. I love watching him drive and you wish him all the best.

“He’s a great character, he wears his heart on his sleeve, he’s very critical of himself and he’ll be beating himself up over this one.”
