Erik ten Hag told Premier League title is "expected" at Man Utd by Jaap Stam

Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has told Erik ten Hag that he will be expected to win the Premier League title at Old Trafford.

Stam, who won three top-flight titles, an FA Cup and a Champions League in four seasons with the Red Devils, made the comments following reports Ten Hag will replace Ralf Rangnick as United boss. The 52-year-old could be confirmed as Rangnick's successor in the next week as United look to get their house in order ahead of next season.

United haven't won the Premier League since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson. But Stam, 48, believes Ten Hag will be expected to deliver straight away, both at home and in Europe.

According to the Sun, he said: "The pressure at United is much greater. The club management can be patient but that does not mean you get time from the outside world. The title and the Champions League are expected. That is no different under a new coach."

Ten Hag knows he will have to dip into the transfer market when he arrives at Old Trafford. But Stam says his most important work will come on the training pitch and in the dressing room as he attempts to bring back the club's glory days.

He added: "Something has to change but you cannot say, ‘These 15 must go and these ten remain’. There are many large contracts. But some changes are crucial for a breath of fresh air and success.

"It becomes difficult if they do not fit into your system. That is why a trainer is required who is demanding and who says in detail what needs to be done.

"There is a world of difference between the Netherlands and England. Ajax has by far the largest budget in the Eredivisie. But there, a trainer is mainly judged on European competitions."

"In England there are three high-level matches every week, with good players at every club and sometimes you have to change the way you play."

Ten Hag will be hoping he arrives with the club in the Champions League. United are back in the race for the top four after beating Norwich on Saturday and seeing results go their way elsewhere.

The Red Devils are now three points adrift of Tottenham in fourth and level on points with Arsenal in sixth. They face the Gunners next weekend after a daunting trip to old rivals Liverpool in midweek.
