Nikola Vlasic was left in tears as Burnley ace Ashley Westwood suffered a serious looking injury following a tackle from the West Ham man.

The two sides met in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon though Westwood needed urgent treatment and was stretchered off following a challenge from Vlasic.

The game was paused for over five minutes as Westwood received treatment from the Burnley medical staff with Josh Brownhill replacing him. Westwood reportedly smiled as he was carried off the pitch to applause from both sets of fans.

Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton said: "Sometimes the most innocuous challenges can turn out to be the biggest injuries.

"If I was the managers, I'd be getting the players away from Westwood; let the medical teams deal with it. The doctors are there, the physios are there. He's getting on a stretcher; I'm sure he'll go to hospital and get checked over."

Fans were quick to pass on their best wishes to Westwood, while not pinning any blame on the West Ham man.

One said: "That looked bad for Westwood. No malice in it, but the way everyone reacted to it… Vlasic is in tears."

Another added: "Freak injury for Westwood, Vlasic thinking it's his fault so he was feeling very guilty, head in his arms."

BBC Radio 5 Live reporter Ian Dennis added: "Straight away Ashley Westwood's reaction was this doesn’t look good. Looks like right lower leg and a really bad injury. The good thing is the physios are here straight away. Vlasic is close to tears, Cresswell turned away. It really doesn't look good."

Burnley went ahead in the match as they continue their battle for Premier League survival.

The relegation-threatened Clarets, who sacked Sean Dyche this week, took the lead shortly after Westwood's injury as Wout Weghorst nodded over the line after Jay Rodriguez struck the bar.
