Senegal fans have relentlessly bombarded England’s social media posts after it was confirmed they would clash in the World Cup last 16 this weekend. England’s 3-0 win against Wales on Tuesday secured top spot in Group B, setting up a clash with the Lions of Teranga in the knockout stages.
Marcus Rashford’s second-half brace on either side of Phil Foden’s strike crushed Wales hearts as Gareth Southgate’s side bounced back from the toothless 0-0 draw against the USA. The result confirmed England’s best-ever group stage at a major tournament, with seven points, nine goals scored, and only two conceded.
Earlier in the day, Senegal dramatically edged into the last 16 in a tense contest against Ecuador, who only needed a draw to progress. Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly helped their nation to a 2-1 win at the Khalifa International Stadium, securing second in Group A with six points behind the Netherlands.
And Senegal fans have wasted no time in warning England of the threat they possess, with passionate compatriots dominating the Three Lions’ social media posts referring to Sunday’s high-stakes meeting. Supporters converged in their hundreds in the Instagram comment sections to make it clear they do not fear the world’s No 5-ranked country.

England have never met Senegal but are unbeaten on all seven occasions they have faced African opposition. The nation’s first meeting came against Morocco, a 0-0 draw in the 1986 World Cup group stage. A 1-0 win against Egypt in the 1990 World Cup followed before Gary Lineker helped secure a 3-2 triumph over Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
Since that thriller, England beat Tunisia 2-0 in the 1998 World Cup before slumping to 0-0 draws against Nigeria and Algeria at the 2002 and 2010 editions, respectively. Harry Kane scored twice, including a stoppage-time winner, in the most recent game against an African side when Southgate’s men beat Tunisia 2-1 in Russia four years ago.

Senegal started their 2022 World Cup campaign with a harsh 2-0 defeat to the Netherlands, conceding in the 84th and 99th minutes. But they responded strongly with a 3-1 win against hosts Qatar and Tuesday’s hard-fought victory over Ecuador.
Aliou Cisse’s side will provide a stern test for England, a test that can’t be taken lightly, despite the daunting prospect of a quarter-final against reigning champions France likely on the back of the squad’s mind.
