Denmark vs Finland Euro 2020 game to resume on same night Eriksen collapses
The Euro 2020 clash between Denmark and Finland will resume at 7.30pm UK time tonight, the Danish Football Association (DBU) has announced.
Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the game earlier on Saturday, with players from both sides immediately signalling for medical assistance.
Eriksen was being resuscitated on the pitch by medical staff, leaving players and spectators visibly distressed and in tears, but he left the field conscious and in a stable condition, and is now awake in hospital.
The group stage clash will now play to a conclusion on Saturday night after the players were reassured that Eriksen is stable.
The Danish FA said in a statement: Christian Eriksen is awake and his condition remains stable.
‘He remains hospitalized at Rigshospitalet for further examinations. The match against Finland will be played tonight.
‘This happens after the players have been confirmed that Christian is okay. The match resumes at 20.30 BST [7.30 UK time].
A statement from UEFA also confirmed that the match will recommence on Saturday: ‘Following the request made by players of both teams, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET (TBC).
‘The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half.
‘The match has been suspended due to a medical emergency which involved Denmark’s Christian Eriksen. The player in now in hospital and in a stable condition. UEFA wishes Christian Eriksen a full and speedy recovery and wishes to thank both teams for their exemplary attitude.’
In the BBC studio, Gary Lineker said: ‘It’s one of the most distressing scenes I think I’ve ever seen at a football match. Christian Eriksen falling to the ground, his team-mates surrounding him.
‘I’m clearly distraught and both his team-mates and the Finland team. Football truly put into perspective. I think the only thing I can remember remotely like that is Fabrice Muamba, he pulled through.Lets hope for his sake that Christian pulls through as well. So distressing.’
Former Arsenal and Chelsea star Cesc Fabregas added: ‘I don’t even know what to say really. My body is shaking.
‘All I can think is about Christian’s family, what they must be going through. It’s a very, very sad moment we’re going through and I pray for the very best.’
