De Gea ‘agreed to accept big Man Utd pay cut’ days before FA Cup horror show

Manchester United's shot-stopper David De Gea agreed to a pay cut just days before his Everton blunder.

The Red Devils edged past the Toffees in the third round of the FA Cup and there was a big speed bump on the way thanks to the Spaniard. De Gea had awkwardly attempted to use his legs to block Neal Maupay's cutback, only for the ball to ricochet off both his legs and pop out in front of goal.

All Conor Coady had to do was stroke the ball home to fire Everton level. Roy Keane, who was a pundit on ITV, slammed De Gea, and he joked it was "like he's had a few drinks".

In 2019, De Gea put pen to paper on a four-year deal that saw him take home an eye-watering £ 375,000 per week.

De Gea's current deal expires this summer, and the Red Devils have opted against extending it by 12 months – which they had the option to do. Instead, according to The Telegraph, United are hoping to "enter discussions" to agree a new deal, on lower wages.

And De Gea is reportedly willing to accept the pay cut so he can remain in Manchester.

When asked if he wanted to end his career at Old Trafford, De Gea said: “I hope so. I was saying this is my club, I’ve been here many, many years and it’s a huge honour to be here and I’m so happy here.

“Yeah, I’m very relaxed [about the contract], just focussed on training, performing as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”
