David Brooks makes first appearance after cancer battle to send stadium wild

Bournemouth star David Brooks made his first Premier League appearance after a lengthy battle with cancer at Aston Villa.

A buzz of excitement spread around Villa Park as the 25-year-old got ready to make his official return to professional football on Saturday. Brooks had endured a long spell on the sidelines after being diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma in October 2021.

And having been given the all clear in May 2022, the midfielder was met with huge cheers and a standing ovation from both the home and away fans as he entered the field.

Brooks played the last ten minutes of the match, where relegation-threatened Bournemouth conceded two more after his introduction to lose 3-0.

But Brooks’ involvement marked a hugely positive moment in an otherwise dismal afternoon for the Cherries in the midlands. And fans quickly took to social media to show their support for the 21-times capped Wales international.

One Twitter user wrote: “Welcome back to the beautiful game, David Brooks. It is so, so good to have you back.”

A third added: “After what he has been through it’s so good to see him smile again," and a fourth commented: “The magic man is back. Welcome back Brooksy!!!!!!”

Meanwhile the official Bournemouth account tweeted: "A big moment… Brooksy is back. We're so proud of you, Brooksy."
