Chelsea make £40m offer for Everton starlet Anthony Gordon

Chelsea make £40m offer for Everton starlet Anthony Gordon as they target the 21-year-old as competition for Reece James at right wing-back… but Everton want AT LEAST £50m

  • Anthony Gordon, 21, is getting interest from Chelsea, who want a £40m move
  • Everton have no interest in losing Gordon, who is now a mainstay in their side
  • Chelsea view Gordon as a young player capable of challenging Reece James
  • Thomas Tuchel wants to add more competition at right wing-back this summer

Chelsea want to sign Everton youngster Anthony Gordon and have opened talks over a proposed £40million deal.

The Blues are after a right-sided player to provide genuine competition to Reece James and see Gordon as a top candidate.

Chelsea have indicated an initial willingness to pay £40m for the 21-year-old – but Everton are believed to value Gordon at at least £50m.

Discussions are set to continue this week.

Agreeing personal terms with Gordon will not pose a problem for Chelsea, it is understood.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, pundit Jamie Carragher rubbished the idea Everton would ever accept an offer of £40m for one of the bright sparks in their side.

‘It’s a lot of money for a young player just coming on to the scene,’ Carragher said.

‘But I don’t see how Everton could accept that. The position they find themselves in right now, lacking attacking players, he’s the one big hope for the club.

‘The supporters aren’t daft at Everton.

‘They’ve lost their first two games, they know it’s going to be a difficult season, they need an attacking player coming in so there’s no way they can let him go.

‘He’s a local lad and he’s the one they are all hanging their hats on. I think it will have to be a lot higher than that (£40m) for Everton to accept that.’

More to follow.
