Carlos Alcaraz appears to injure himself whilst CELEBRATING his winning goal for Southampton against Leicester, before he is subbed off… as Jamie Redknapp warns players need to ‘be careful’

  • Southampton picked up a vital three points against Leicester on Saturday
  • Carlos Alcaraz scored the only goal of the game with a composed finish
  • He then appeared to injure himself while celebrating the strike with a knee slide

Carlos Alcaraz seemed to injure himself while celebrating a goal on Saturday as Southampton beat Leicester 1-0.

The 20-year-old scored the only goal of the game with a composed finish after a good run on the counter-attack, but appeared to pick up a knock during a botched knee slide in celebration.

His left leg bent awkwardly under his body during the slide, and the midfielder was subbed off shortly after half-time following a period of uncertain movement.

Mohamed Elyounoussi came on for Alcaraz as the Saints held on for a potentially vital three points despite a multitude of chances for the visitors.

Jamie Redknapp urged caution from the youngster after the apparent injury, as he told Sky Sports: ‘It looked like he did it in his celebration when he did his knee slide. You have to be so careful with these things, because they need him.

‘You can see he’s got a bit of quality and a bit of devilment about his game and he plays without fear as well.’

Alcaraz has certainly made quite the impact since arriving on the South Coast from Brazil in January and has scored twice in his first five league games.

Redknapp, who finished his playing career at Southampton, added: ‘I was surprised they brought him back on you could see the lad was struggling.

‘They brought him back on in the second half and you don’t know what it does to the injury.’

New Saints boss Ruben Selles admitted Alcaraz may regret the celebration, but was full of praise for the young midfielder, as he said: ‘I think sometimes the emotion of the moment drives you into places that you will regret.

‘He’s a young player, we play him in that position because I think we needed the penetration from the centre and we’re happy for him because he’s a really good player.

Jamie Redknapp warned Alcaraz ‘should be careful with these things’ after the celebration

‘He didn’t play too much I the first two games we had together and he’s a player that hopefully will give a lot for Southampton football club.’

Saturday’s win moved Selles’ side off the foot of the Premier League, as they overtook Bournemouth on goal difference.

Southampton are now just a point from safety, and may be building some momentum after two wins in their last three league games.

They will next be in action against high-flying Manchester United next Sunday.
