Preston thumped Championship rivals Huddersfield 4-1 in the Carabao Cup at the John Smith’s Stadium to pile pressure on manager Danny Schofield.
The Terriers were already in trouble after losing their first two games of the season against Burnley and Birmingham and now they are out of the first domestic cup.
Meanwhile, there was a hammering in an all-League One contest as Exeter thrashed rivals Cheltenham 7-0 to storm into the second round of the Carabao Cup.

The Grecians inflicted on Cheltenham their heaviest home defeat for 30 years, while nine Championship clubs crashed out after defeats to lower-league opposition.
It took Exeter 23 minutes to open the scoring at Whaddon Road, but they then fired four goals in a 12-minute spell through Sam Nombe’s brace, Archie Collins and Matt Jay.
Jack Sparkes added a fifth in first-half stoppage time, Harry Kite made it 6-0 in the 50th minute and Josh Coley rounded off the scoring six minutes from the end.
Mark Hughes’ League Two side Bradford knocked out Championship visitors Hull 2-1 at Valley Parade.
Exeter ran riot against their League One rivals Cheltenham – netting seven away from home
Andy Cook scored twice for the Bantams, who came from behind to record their first home win in the competition for eight years, after goalkeeper Harry Lewis’s unlucky own goal had given Hull a first-half lead.
Last season’s Championship play-off semi-finalists Luton were dumped out by League Two side Newport, who won 3-2 at Kenilworth Road thanks to James Waite’s late strike.
Fellow League Two side Colchester stunned Ipswich at Portman Road, where Luke Hannant scored the only goal in the 29th minute, and third-tier Portsmouth won 3-0 at Cardiff.
Cardiff’s Vontae Daley-Campbell’s late red card on his debut compounded the Welsh side’s misery after second-half goals from Pompey’s Joe Pigott, Ronan Curtis (penalty) and substitute Colby Bishop.
Ged Garner’s first-half header sent League One Fleetwood through against Wigan and Oxford knocked out another Championship side, Swansea, 5-3 on penalties after hitting back from two down to force a 2-2 draw.
Colchester pulled off a shock against their local rivals Ipswich at Portman Road
Goals from Swansea pair Jay Fulton and Liam Cullen were cancelled out by Alex Gorrin and Cameron Brannagan’s stoppage-time free-kick.
Danny Rose fired Stevenage’s late winner as they upset Championship side Reading 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium. Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan had earlier levelled for the Royals after Saxon Earley’s opener.
League One side Burton bowed out after losing 2-0 at fourth-tier Rochdale thanks to goals in the closing moments from James Ball and Devante Rodney.
Shane McLoughlin scored the decisive penalty as League One Morecambe knocked out Stoke of the Championship, winning 5-3 in a shoot-out after a 0-0 draw, despite the second-half dismissal of Jensen Weir.
Barrow upset Championship side Blackpool 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw and Tranmere came through a marathon 12-11 shoot-out win at Accrington. The score had been locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes, Ryan Astley with a late own goal having earlier scored for Accrington, and Sean Whalley then missed his second penalty of the shoot-out – Stanley’s 13th.
Norwich squeezed through to the next round after a penalty shootout win over Birmingham
Meanwhile, Norwich needed penalties to see off Birmingham, winning the shoot-out 4-2 after a 2-2 draw.
Tom Barkhuizen’s second-half winner sealed Derby a 2-1 win at Mansfield, Bolton cruised to a 5-1 home win against Salford and Shrewsbury edged past Carlisle 3-2.
Lincoln were comfortable 3-0 winners at Doncaster, Grimsby beat Crewe 4-0, Gillingham were 2-0 winners at AFC Wimbledon and Crawley overcame Bristol Rovers 1-0.
Forest Green, MK Dons, Wycombe and Walsall all progressed after wins against Leyton Orient, Sutton, Northampton and Swindon respectively.
