Bruno Fernandes has hailed Manchester United’s supporters for the atmosphere generated during their Europa League play-off victory over Barcelona.

Manchester United fought back against the La Liga leaders to win 2-1 at Old Trafford in the second leg, advancing 4-3 on aggregate to the last-16.

Robert Lewandowski’s first half penalty had given Barcelona the lead at the break.

Goals from Fred and Antony saw United fight back to progress in the competition.

Fernandes, who captained the team in the victory, claimed the role of the supporters in Old Trafford was vital in helping the team overturn the deficit.

‘They have been with us in the toughest moments, this season we have been really good,’ Fernandes told BT Sport. ‘They are always behind us.’

‘This is something different. Between them and us we have something special. 

‘They see that we are doing all we can to win games for them.

‘Old Trafford was bouncing, that’s why we get results. Straight after the second half starts you knew we would get results.’

Fans stayed behind following the match at Old Trafford, with the squad and manager Erik ten Hag cheered off the pitch.

The bond between the team and the supporters was billed as ‘something special’

Ten Hag had claimed the result represented his biggest win since taking charge last summer.

The Dutchman has now overseen wins over Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham at Old Trafford during his first season at the club.

Victory over Barcelona keeps Manchester United in contention in four competitions this season, with the club now awaiting the last-16 draw in the Europa League tomorrow.

Attentions will now turn to the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday.
