Bruno Fernandes accused of giving Villarreal 20% advantage in penalty shoot-out
Manchester United were beaten 11-10 on penalties by Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday, with the Red Devils failing to win their first piece of silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The game ended 1-1 after extra-time and went to a shootout, with United's captain Bruno Fernandes appearing to win the coin toss and deciding to let Villarreal take their spot kicks first.
However, according to research from the London School of Economics [LSE], this decision was a mistake and handed Villarreal a 20% advantage.
LSE Professor of Managerial Economics and Strategy Ignacio Palacios-Huertat
The report's author, LSE Professor of Managerial Economics and Strategy Ignacio Palacios-Huerta, told the Daily Mail: "I would think that most people in football know about, or at least have the right intuition on this 60-40 advantage.
"It was shocking to see that Bruno decided to give that 20 per cent advantage to Villarreal."
