Brighton have opened talks to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud.

The Germany international is a free agent and has had interest and a number of offers from around Europe but talks are advancing with Roberto de Zerbi’s club and the Italian coach is understood to be a big draw in negotiations.

Dahoud, 27, has made over 140 appearances for Dortmund but only ten this season after dislocating a shoulder last year.

He is understood to have undergone medical tests in London on Monday.

Brighton have already signed Joao Pedro from Watford and are close to agreement with Liverpool’s James Milner also.

They are, however, braced to receive bids for Liverpool target Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo.

Syria-born Dahoud joined Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2017 in a deal agreed while Thomas Tuchel was still in charge of the German giants.

By the time Dahoud’s move was completed Tuchel had left the Signal Iduna Park club, who beat Liverpool and Barcelona to his signature, with Chelsea and Manchester City were also previously keen before he was snapped up by Dortmund.

Dahoud broke into the Germany setup in 2021, earning his first two caps against Turkey and the Czech Republic.
