Boris Johnson once gave a shocking answer which left football fans feeling slightly uneasy over which team he supports.

The Prime Minster has been in the firing line in recent weeks after it emerged that a series of 'parties' were held by the Conservative Party while the country was under strict restrictions.

But the controversial politician may have divided the population further with a bizarre claim during the middle of his second term as Mayor of London back in 2015.

When asked what his footballing allegiances were, fence-sitter Johnson stated he had no favourites and was rooting for every club across the capital.

He said: "I support all of the London teams," before adding his children support Newcastle United.

While clearly a diplomatic response to keep fans of various clubs on-side in his political endeavours, Johnson’s answer comes as a surprise given the deep rivalries between London clubs.

Such a statement would be inexplicable to die-hard West Ham fans who share a bitter and long-standing rivalry with Millwall.

If taken at face value, Johnson’s claim would also suggest he cheers on all of Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham as they battle for the two remaining top-four Premier League places this season.

However, the Prime Minister’s international allegiance is far clearer, having regularly attended England matches at Euro 2020 on their route to the final.

He was spotted in an England kit for the final and even tweeted out a “It’s coming home” message to his followers.

Johnson has even dabbled in playing the beautiful game in the past, having famously taken part in a charity game back in 2006 where he rugby tackled former German international Maurizio Gaudino.

Questionable footballing philosophy and ability aside, Johnson made an effort to secure England as hosts for the 2018 World Cup, which was eventually given to Russia.

And while his answer gave the air of someone who does not really have an interest, it certainly beats David Cameron forgetting he was an Aston Villa fan by confusing them with West Ham.
