Pieere-Emerick Aubameyang has followed his manager’s lead and refused to comment on the reason he was left out of Arsenal’s derby day win over Tottenham. The Gunners skipper was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the visit of Spurs, remaining on that throughout the 2-1 win.

His replacement, Alexandre Lacazette scored the all important second goal as Arsenal came from behind to earn the north London bragging rights.

Arteta’s afternoon got off to the worst possible start when he confirmed Aubameyang had been dropped for disciplinary reasons.

Asked ahead of the game, he explained: “He was going to start the game but we had a disciplinary issue.

“We have drawn the line and we move on. He’s on the bench.”

Aubameyang cut a frustrated figure up in the Emirates stands as he watched his team secure a vital three points in their race for a top-six.

The Arsenal boss was pressed for further detail, but remianed coy: “Obviously we keep that internally. We have our process that we have to respect every game and that’s it.”

With Arteta’s side trailing, there was a feeling he could turn to his top scorer, only to stand firm and leave him as an unused sub.

After the win, Arteta expanded on the issue, while reaffirming his commitment to keep the issue in-house.

“I made what I thought was the right decision. We draw the line there.

“We know how important Auba is for us, for the club and that’s it. That’s been dealt with and we move on.”

And now Aubameyang himself has taken to social media, but only to offer his support to the players that did the business on the field.

Alongside a picture of the celebrations, he posted: “North London is Red and that’s it!!!”

The win keeps Arsenal in with a chance of securing a top-four finish, although they remained firmly entrenched in midtable.

Woth ten games remaining, they sit five points off the top six and a further five off Chelsea, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot.

Arteta said his team are up for with their local rivals now just four points ahead of them in the Premier League table.

“Hopefully, it will increase the level of confidence of the team and the belief that we can play really well against any opponent, we can beat big teams as well and just maintain everybody together with a big belief,” he said.

“We know we have to put four or five wins together in a row to give ourselves any chance of looking up in the table, but we are ready for a fight.

“Up until mathematically it’s impossible [top-four] we’re going to believe and we’re going to give it a go that is for sure.

“We know that we’re going to have to be extremely consistent, to have any chance in the last two or three matches to be close to that. But we’re going to give it a go and we’re going to keep trying going game by game.”
