Arsenal legend Thierry Henry told Barcelona to appoint Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry claimed he recommended Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to Barcelona.

While the Dutchman found himself on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against the Gunners, United’s improvement was still clear to see. The Red Devils showed no fear at the Emirates Stadium and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point.

However, Henry revealed his admiration for Ten Hag stems way beyond his Old Trafford appointment, as he actually tried to convince Barcelona president Joan Laporta to take a chance on him.

“I will be honest I am a big fan of Ten Hag and I like him very much,” Henry said to CBS Sports. “He is the coach I recommended to [club president, Joan] Laporta after Koeman got sacked at Barca. He is a genius.

“Today we saw a team with three years of development against a team with six months of development, also a team with one week of rest against a team with two days of rest yet still Man United went toe-to-toe which for me was surprising.

“I thought Arsenal would be all over United from the kick-off and United players would sit back but I was wrong, United in fact had better control of the ball in the first half.”

United took the lead through a wonder goal from Marcus Rashford, but found themselves 2-1 down after goals either side of half-time from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka. Lisandro Martinez levelled proceedings with a very clever looping header and looked to have given his side a vital point, only for Nketiah to snatch the game away in the final minute.

Yet, after only six months in charge of the Red Devils, Henry senses something great in the former Ajax manager. “You give one more year to Ten Hag and back him in the market, United will be a force to be reckoned with,” Henry added.

“No disrespect to Sir Alex but if Ten Hag gets it right at United, they will play more attractive football than they played under Sir Alex Ferguson.”
