Mikel Arteta has been told to look forwards, not back after Arsenal were linked with Aaron Ramsey and Wojciech Szczesny in the summer transfer window. Amid speculation the Premier League side could re-sign both players from Juventus, former Gunners striker Kevin Campbell said of Szczesny: ‘I don’t want him.’

With the Juve set for a squad overhaul this summer, former Arsenal stars Ramsey and Szczesny are among the players who could be sold.

Both play in positions Arteta may need to strengthen, with questions continuing over goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s future, while midfielders Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos are expected to return to Real Madrid at the end of their loan spells.

Szczesny could be available, with Andrea Pirlo’s side reportedly keen on signing Gianluigi Donnarumma once his AC Milan contract expires at the end of this season.

But Campbell warned Arteta against signing the 31-year-old, who made 181 appearances for Arsenal before joining Juve four years ago.

“I don’t want him back,” former title-winner Campbell told FootballInsider.

“He has gone away and done very well wherever he has been but I do not like to go back.

“I like to look forward and I think there are other goalkeepers we should target in the summer.

“The legacy of a goalkeeper coming in who can make the spot his own is important. When you come back to the club it is always difficult, especially at Arsenal.

“His first spell at Arsenal wasn’t amazing, let’s be honest.”

Szczesny spent 11 years at Arsenal – eight of which were as a professional including five as Arteta’s team-mate.

He spent the last two years of his time at the Emirates on loan at Roma – but after joining Juventus in 2017 he has overtaken Gianluigi Buffon as the club’s No 1 and been a regular for the past three seasons.

Szczesny has won three Serie A titles with Juve, as well as the Coppa Italia in 2018 and two Italian Super Cups.

Meanwhile, Leno has been linked with a move away from the Gunners following a series of high-profile errors this season.

Ramsey has been linked with a return to the Emirates after failing to hold down a place in Pirlo’s side.

He has reportedly been made available for transfer ahead of the summer window, despite the fact he has two years left on his contract.

The 30-year-old Wales star made 371 appearances for the club during an eight-and-a-half-year spell in north London, winning three FA Cups.

He joined Juventus on a free transfer in 2019 after his Arsenal contract expired, and could cost around £20m to re-sign.
