NRL staffer deletes tweet after Scott Morrison reaction goes viral

The Parramatta staffer who voiced her outrage about Scott Morrison attending Saturday night’s NRL game against Cronulla has reportedly deleted her tweet after sparking a frenzy on social media.

An image of Eels sports scientist Tahleya Eggers with her arms folded, staring daggers at Morrison while he visited the side’s changeroom to congratulate the players on their 28-4 win over his beloved Sharks went viral, and she owned her stance in the aftermath.

“Proud to claim this one,” Eggers wrote on Twitter.

“I will not respect a man who has the time to shake hands of men who have won a football match but is ‘too busy’ to attend the March for Justice.”

She was referring to Morrison’s refusal to come out of Parliament House and meet the thousands of women who gathered in Canberra earlier this month — and across cities around Australia — to listen to their concerns.

However, as of Monday morning, Eggers’ tweet appeared to have been deleted.

Her stance attracted support from former Eels star Brad Takairangi, who replied to her tweet by writing: “Gettem Tahleya.”

The twist came as The Daily Telegraph reported Eggers would not face any sanction from the club for her dig at the Prime Minister, who has been heavily criticised for his approach to dealing with disrespectful attitudes and behaviour towards women, particularly within parliament.

Eggers’ scowl came as Morrison knocked back an offer from Eels star Reed Mahoney to skol a beer with the players.

Mahoney looked like a kid on Christmas morning, clapping his hands, roaring and pumping his fists, determined that peer pressure would encourage Morrison to chug.

He was let down, though, as the politician took only a small sip, but the rest of the Eels were up on their feet cheering along anyway.

Fox League commentator Michael Ennis joked Morrison, like some of the Sharks players, may have suffered a concussion himself and entered the wrong changeroom.

“Maybe he has had a HIA. Maybe he’s gone wandering,” Ennis said.

“Everyone thought there would be a national day off tomorrow, had he have necked that.”

Yvonne Sampson added of Morrison’s beer drinking effort: “It’s hardly Bob Hawke, is it?”

Morrison has been engulfed in scandal over the past six weeks after Brittany Higgins’ allegation she was raped in a ministerial office at Parliament House and a historical rape accusation being levelled against Attorney-General Christian Porter — an accusation Porter has vigorously denied.

The Prime Minister has been facing pressure to take meaningful action and listen to women’s demands, and last week told Ray Hadley in a radio interview: “I’m just glad the footy’s back on. It helps everybody.”

Sharks supporters weren’t smiling on Saturday night as their team suffered its second loss in a row — as well as a scary injury toll.

Winger Sione Katoa was taken off the field with a knee injury after his leg got twisted in a tackle, captain Wade Graham and second-rower Briton Nikora both failed HIA tests and fullback William Kennedy did the same during the break as Cronulla played the second half with just 13 fit men.
