BBQ bad boy receives NRL lifeline

The Canterbury Bulldogs have snapped up BBQ bad boy Paul Vaughan on a one-year deal.

Vaughan, the player who hosted the infamous BBQ attended by a dozen St George Illawarra players, copped a $50,000 fine and an eight-game suspension as a result of his actions.

The 30-year-old forward was sacked from the Dragons due to multiple breaches of his contract, as the BBQ breached not only the league’s biosecurity rules, but also the NSW government’s stay-at-home order to curb the spread of the Covid-19 Delta strain.

Vaughan brings a bucketload of experience to the Bulldogs, who are rebuilding under the guidance of guru Phil Gould.

Barrett was licking his lips at the prospect of Vaughan running riot for the Belmore outfit next season.

“Paul is someone who will bring both ability and experience to our young pack for next season,” Barrett said.

“Everyone knows what a damaging ball-runner he is and the impact that he can have on a game and we believe that we will be able to harness that moving forward.

“I know that Paul is excited about the opportunity to come and join us and we believe that he still has a great deal to offer in the game.

“We look forward to seeing Paul run out in the blue and white next year and welcome him and his family to the club.”

Vaughan has played 181 NRL games for the Canberra Raiders and Dragons, after making his debut in 2013.

He has also represented Australia in two Test matches in 2019, as well as donning the sky blue jersey of the NSW Blues on six occasions between 2018-19.
