Peter Schmeichel thinks Gareth Southgate made the right decision by leaving Jadon Sancho out of his World Cup squad.

Sancho featured for England at last year’s Euros, and joined Manchester United for £73m shortly after the tournament.

However, he has struggled to live up to expectations, only showing glimpses of his potential, and this has cost him a place in Qatar. Schmeichel has admitted the 22-year-old has not found his best form at Old Trafford, and did not deserve to make the 26-man squad that Southgate named on Thursday afternoon.

Peter Schmeichel thinks Gareth Southgate was right to omit Sancho from his squad

‘I don’t think he’s done enough,’ Schmeichel said on Sky Sports ahead of United’s Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa on Thursday night.

‘I’m a little bit disappointed with the talent that he has, and yes it’s difficult to come to Old Trafford with that price-tag, I understand that. But he’s shown that he can do whatever he did at Borussia Dortmund, he just hasn’t done it enough.’

After a difficult debut season at Old Trafford last term, Sancho threatened to spark into life when he scored against Liverpool and Leicester in the opening weeks of the current season.

Yet his performances tailed off after that, and he has been unavailable in recent weeks due to illness.

This has left him behind the likes of Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish in the England pecking order.

Dion Dublin agreed with Schmeichel’s assessment of Sancho, and feels the player himself will know that he can have no complaints about being left out by Southgate.

‘The Sancho one, he’s probably saying to himself, “I haven’t done enough, fair play, Gareth,”‘ Dublin added.
