Toto Wolff will return to the track this month when the Bahrain Grand Prix starts on March 20. The last Formula One season ended in controversial circumstances when Max Verstappen took Lewis Hamilton’s title at the death. But who is Toto’s wife, Susie?
Susie Wolff will no doubt be supporting her husband Toto when Mercedes return to the track – but she is no cheerleader.
The couple married in 2011 and have a boy together, who will turn five next month, and the family live together in Monaco.
Born Susie Stoddart, she was born in Oban, Scotland where her parents – John and Sally – owned a motorcycle dealership while her father raced bikes.
But the 39-year-old has a long history in motorsports, beginning when she was just eight when she began karting – being named British Woman Kart Racing Driver of the year in 1996.
She would go on to graduate from karting to single-seater ring in 2001 when she competed for the Motaworld Racing team in the Formula Renault Winter Series.
Four years later, Wolff advanced into Formula Three – though her season was ravaged by an ankle injury that she suffered in the winter.
She got her first taste of Mercedes when she joined them for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) for six years before the jump to Formula One in 2012.
That was when she was named as a development driver for the Williams team, eventually becoming the first woman to participate in a F1 weekend since 1992 when she drove a practice session at the British Grand Prix.
In 2015, she announced on BBC that she would retire from Formula One before joining Mercedes as an ambassador in 2016, though her attention as since turned to Formula E.
Since retiring, Susie has often worked as a pundit for Channel 4’s F1 coverage.
Wolff joined Venturi Racing in 2018 as Team Principal, as well as becoming a shareholder in the team and a year later they entered a powertrain partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
Her power grew last year when in November she was promoted to the role of CEO a season after their best-ever performance, recording 146 points and Edoardo Mortara securing second in the Drivers’ World Championship.
For her services to women in sport, Susie was awarded a MBE in 2017 while she also attended the University of Edinburgh.
