Max Verstappen ‘really, really annoyed’ as Nico Rosberg hails ‘perfect’ Hamilton

F1 preview: A lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen was left “really annoyed” after Lewis Hamilton clinched pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix. According to Ted Kravitz, the Red Bull ace was furious when leaving the post-qualifying interview pen having missed out on P1 by 0.003 seconds.

Kravitz felt the Dutchman was annoyed at himself after Red Bull admitted mistakes on his final lap probably cost him an eighth pole of the season. Speaking on Ted’s Notebook, Kravitz explained: “You should have seen Max Verstappen leaving the interview pen just a moment ago. He was cross.

“Max was cross. And I like that for two reasons. First of all, he’s cross he didn’t improve his final lap, made a mistake turn one and other places around the lap.

“And secondly even though he knows he’s probably still going to win the Grand Prix such is their dominance… But he does not have that in the back of his head. He left that interview pen annoyed. He left it really, really annoyed. I love that about Max bearing all of that in mind.” Verstappen looked destined to finish first until Hamilton’s stunning final run clinched the honours.

After the session, Verstappen revealed he was not comfortable in the car through the three-part qualifying hour. Team boss Christian Horner also claimed the reigning champion had made some small errors on his last run.

He explained: “We left a bit on the table, Max had a snap at Turn 13. But front row of the grid is still very good.” Hamilton was left stunned after topping the leaderboard in qualifying for the first time in 18 months.

Former team-mate Nico Rosberg heaped praise on the seven-time champion and suggested the Mercedes ace was the “only” driver who could achieve such a feat.

Rosberg told Sky Sports F1: “He gave it everything he had. I witnessed these special moments and these days he used to have. Today was one of those.

“That lap there is like perfection, it’s art. Only Lewis Hamilton can do that on such days. No one could have even gone a hundredth quicker. How awesome, super.” Despite the performance, Hamilton seemed to agree with Kravitz that Verstappen would likely have the upper hand on race day.

The 38-year-old explained: “It will be difficult to fight these two guys – Lando has been doing a mega job, it’s been great to see McLaren up there and Max, you know Max, he’s always up there doing his thing.”
