Martin Brundle shoots down Hamilton’s excuses as Mercedes fall foul of rules
Martin Brundle has called out Lewis Hamilton after the Mercedes driver suggested that the skid blocks are not a performance element after they led to his disqualification at the United States GP.
Hamilton finished second on the road at the United States GP last weekend, crossing the chequered flag just two seconds behind race winner and reigning world champion Max Verstappen.
However, following a post-race inspection, Hamilton and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc were both disqualified when it was discovered that their skid blocks were deemed to be in breach of the technical regulations.
The 38-year-old was extremely frustrated when discussing the incident with Sky Sports F1 in Mexico, stating: “The skid is not a performance element. Of course, if you have a flat surface everyone is going to be pushing their car to be as low as possible.

“But it’s mostly some cars handle the bumps better than others and you know we have had a very stiff and bumpy car for the last two years. But ultimately it failed the regulation and that needs to change.”
The disqualification cost Hamilton crucial points in his battle with Sergio Perez in the Drivers’ Championship. The pair are now separated by 39 points with four rounds remaining ahead of the Mexican’s home race on Sunday.
Brundle also disagreed with the seven-time world champion, stating: “I feel differently to Lewis, I must say, in that, we know this generation of car that started in 2022, closer to the ground means quite a bit more performance.

“And I would also like to say I think the FIA do a tremendous job of policing the technical aspects of Formula 1. There are reasons, we understand, why they chose those two cars (Hamilton and Leclerc) in the beginning to check, [was] because [of] the data they’d seen and they checked some others.
“I can’t help but think because the teams take the planks off – they’re not made of wood they’re made of resin – take them off and impound and measure them.
“We don’t know if the rest of the field were illegal. I’ve asked some of the team members, of course, they all say their car was fine. Another team said they weren’t sure, which is nonsense.”
