F2 car goes completely airborne in ‘horrible’ crash at Monaco Grand Prix

British Formula 2 start Jake Hughes suffered a horrific crash in Monte Carlo just hours before the Formula One weekend kicks off properly with the first of two Free Practice sessions on Friday.

The Van Amersfoort Racing driver clipped the inside of the swimming pool section in turn 13 and lost his front wing, then colliding with the armco barrier on the outside of turn 14 at high speed – sending debris across the track and bringing out the red flag with just a minute left in the session.

Thankfully, Hughes was unharmed and confirmed he was ok over team radio, saying: "Yes, I'm okay. Sorry guys," and, with the session not resuming, finished fifth in Group B.

Former driver Alex Brundle defended Hughes for the accident and blamed a poor designed kerb for causing the crash that brought a premature end to the qualifying session.

“I was just here a couple of weeks ago for the historic, one of my mates driving a historic 1980s F1 car said ‘goodness me that kerb on the left hand side in the swimming pool that orange raised part really chucks the car towards the outside and the second kerb’. He’s had a nasty bump mid corner there, taking off towards the wall.”

Liam Lawson took pole for the Sprint right at the last, capitalising after championship leader Felipe Drugovich hit the wall at turn 19, bringing out the yellow flags in the final sector.

Hughes later took to social media to once again confirm he was okay and stated he 'owes the boys some drinks' following the accident in Monte Carlo.

"All okay. Massive apologies to the team. Rolled the dice on that lap, was going well but my luck ran out in the swimming pool. Hopefully we can fix the car to be on pole tomorrow. I owe the boys some drinks," he posted on Twitter.

The Formula 2 race in Monaco is the support race for Formula One this weekend, with a Sprint on Saturday ahead of F1's qualifying session and the race itself on Sunday before F1's main event later in the day.

Drugovich current holds a 26-point advantage over Theo Pourchaire heading into the fifth round of the F2 season.
