F1 fans ‘crying’ as Sebastian Vettel shares picture of Michael Schumacher

Sebastian Vettel has followed Mick Schumacher in posting a nostalgic picture of the great Michael Schumacher.

Mick has recently published a string of poignant images of himself with his seven-time world champion father, who turned 54 at the start of the month. Schumacher’s health status remains a closely guarded secret but, almost a decade on from his devastating skiing accident, messages of support from the F1 world and beyond continue to pour in.

And this week, Vettel, a rare user of social media, has taken to Instagram to share an image of him in his youth before the start of a kart race with none other than Schumacher, in Ferrari colours, giving him some final words of advice.

“Receiving last Orders (NRW Cup Final, Kerpen, Germany),” wrote Vettel. Kerpen, where his parents ran a karting circuit, was where Schumacher caught the racing bug.

He went on to dominate the pinnacle of motorsport, winning two world titles with Benetton in the mid-1990s and five with Ferrari in the early 2000s.

He was also a mentor to Vettel, who was rising through the ranks at the time before making his F1 race debut in 2007 with BMW Sauber and going on to win five world titles of his own with Red Bull at the start of the 2010s.

Vettel then became some of a mentor to Mick, who had a tough first two years in F1 before being dropped by Haas. He is now third driver at Mercedes, where his father spent his final three years in the sport before retiring for a second time.
