NFL hall of famer Willie McGinest has apologised after being caught on camera appearing to hit a man in a restaurant. CCTV footage shows McGinest walk over to confront a man who was sat down, seemingly on his own, with a number of McGinest’s entourage walking behind him before chaos ensued. The New England Patriots legend throws the first punch as a number of people hit the same man who McGinest confronted before the restaurant is cleared as people leave the scene.

McGinest was arrested after the incident in Los Angeles California after handing himself over to police and bailed himself out for $30,000 with no further details released after the incident, with the further status of any investigations unknown.

The incident was said to happen at a restaurant named Delilah on December 9, with the footage coming to light just over a week later, with the former Patriots star now apologising after the incident.

In a statement, he said: “First and foremost, I want to offer my deepest apology for my lapse in judgment and behavior on December 9 at a restaurant in West Hollywood. To my family, community, friends, and youth I mentor, please know I feel horrible for my actions and take full responsibility.”

“To my colleagues at the NFL Network and those I work closely with as an advisor to professional and community-base organizations, please know I am embarrassed and regret what occurred,” McGinest added.

“Most of all, I am disappointed in myself, as I know this is an isolated incident and is not reflective of my faith, role as a father, life’s body of work, or the role model I’ve worked hard to become. It is personally devastating that decades of community service, youth engagement, mentoring, and professional development would become an afterthought in a single moment that should have never happened.”

“This incident has prompted me to deep self-reflection — mind, soul, and spirit. I know that violence is never the answer to such situations, no matter how intense the provocation. Rest assured, I will take whatever steps necessary to restore the public trust, mend damaged relationships, and ensure this never happens again.”

McGinest has been a long-time analyst for the NFL, and was suspended after the incident came to light.

The 51-year-old is remembered as arguably one of the better linebackers in NFL history, playing both off and on the ball, whilst holding the NFL post season sack record (16).
