Football, jokes and Chad Powers: The top ‘ManningCast’ moments from the 2022 NFL season

The second season of Peyton and Eli Manning’s “ManningCast” for “Monday Night Football” will come to a close after the conclusion of the Dallas Cowboys-Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFC wild-card game.

The Manning brothers and their weekly rotation of celebrity guests entertained all year with juicy stories, spicy takes and plenty of humor. For the playoffs, Peyton and Eli welcomed Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders. Sanders gave his perspective on an intense halftime speech he gave his team during his tenure as the Jackson State Tigers’ head coach.

Eli then recalled a passing touchdown Peyton threw against Sanders in the NFL. As the highlight rolled, Sanders offered a hilarious explanation as to why he allowed the score.

Peyton couldn’t watch any more missed extra points after Cowboys kicker Brett Maher failed to connect on all three of his PATs in the first half.

Let’s look back at the best moments from the “ManningCast” during the 2022 NFL season:

Eli lays down the law and Peyton’s timeout barrage

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley stopped by the “ManningCast” for Week 1’s matchup between the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. During Barkley’s appearance, the crew discussed a situation when Barkley and Eli disagreed on a route.

According to Eli, you do whatever the quarterback tells you to do.

Later in the broadcast, Peyton tried to offer the Broncos some timeout guidance late in the fourth quarter. Count the number of times Peyton makes the gesture before Denver heeded his advice.

Spoiler alert: It’s 62.

Eli’s jab at Russell Wilson

Eli was arguably the star of Week 3’s “ManningCast” for the Giants-Cowboys game because of a timely barb.

On Sept. 25, 2022, Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson had an underwhelming performance against the San Francisco 49ers, finishing with 184 yards passing and zero touchdowns in an 11-10 win.

But Broncos punter Corliss Waitman had a big day. He punted the ball 10 times for 476 yards, landed six punts inside the Niners’ 20-yard line and placed two inside San Francisco’s 5. Waitman’s performance earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Eli joked that Waitman deserved a payday similar to Wilson’s $245 million contract extension he signed with the Broncos in September 2022.

Wilson cited his 3-0 career record against the former Giants quarterback in response to Eli’s joke.

Peyton and Eli analyze Bobby Wagner’s hit

Week 4’s Los Angeles Rams-49ers game was paused in the second quarter because a fan ran onto the field. Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner ended the fan’s run with a strong tackle near Los Angeles’ sideline.

Peyton and Eli broke down Wagner’s wallop.

Halloween hijinks

Week 8’s “ManningCast” for the Cleveland Browns-Cincinnati Bengals game took place on Halloween night, which produced impressive costumes. Another pair of NFL brothers, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, joined the show dressed in quarter-zip sweaters and khaki pants, a clothing combination Peyton and Eli frequently wear on the show.

Eli brought his own costume, donning the mask he used for his Chad Powers character in September 2022. Eli disguised himself as a walk-on to a Penn State Nittany Lions football tryout under the Powers alias.

“It’s a combination of Mrs. Doubtfire and Jason from Halloween,” Peyton said about Eli’s mask.

Big hat bros

For Week 14’s MNF contest between the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, Peyton and Eli sported big hats. The headwear became popular after Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. wore one after a 19-13 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Lil Wayne grades Eli’s rapping skills

Green Bay Packers superfan and Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne hung out with the Manning bros for Week 15’s “ManningCast.” The Packers were a talking point for obvious reasons, but Eli’s rapping skills also came up during Wayne’s appearance.

In November 2022, Eli and former teammate Shaun O’Hara hit the recording studio with New York-based rapper Fivio Foreign. The trio dropped some bars for a remix of Fivio’s single “1 on 3,” titled “Giants on 3.”

After hearing a snippet of the song, Lil Wayne gave his stamp of approval on Eli’s lyrics.
