Fantasy Injury Updates: Latest news on David Montgomery, Joe Mixon, Tony Jones Jr., affecting Week 5 waiver pickups

David Montgomery, Joe Mixon, and Tony Jones Jr. all sustained injuries in Week 5 and were forced from their games early. Mixon’s injury update is trending positive, while Montgomery and Jones’ situations are more complicated. We’ll make sense of it all, provide the latest news, and check RB depth charts to see who could become fantasy relevant in the event any of these guys miss time. As always, Week 5 waiver pickups and RB rankings will be affected.

WEEK 5 WAIVERS: Top pickups

David Montgomery injury update

Montgomery went down with a knee injury late in the fourth quarter in Week 4 against the Lions. It was easy to see he was in serious pain as he limped off the field. Knee injuries are obviously concerning and not something the Bears will likely play around with. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday night it was a hyperextension, not something more serious, but obviously we’ll wait for more information.

In his absence, Damien Williams slides in as the starting running back with rookie Khalil Herbert set to back him up. Herbert will likely get some work, but this backfield is Williams’ until further notice. If Montgomery’s injury is serious, it’s worth nothing Tarik Cohen (knee) is eligible to return from the PUP list in Week 7.

For Week 5, Williams ranks as our RB25 in standard and RB19 in PPR leagues against the Raiders.

WEEK 5 STANDARD RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Joe Mixon injury update

Mixon limped off the field late against the Jaguars on Thursday Night Football, but it seems he only suffered a minor ankle sprain. Even with a longer layoff, Mixon could be questionable heading into Week 5 against Green Bay. In that case, Samaje Perine would start for Cincinnati with Chris Evans serving as the secondary back. Stay tuned for Mixon updates throughout the week.

We’re not projecting Mixon to miss Week 5 at this time, so we like him as the RB9 in standard and RB10 in PPR. His targets have dropped since Week 1, but a matchup with a bad Packers’ defense should be a nice opportunity for him, even if he has somewhat of a reduced workload. If he’s out, Perine would be a solid RB2 or flex play.

Tony Jones Jr. injury update

Jones Jr. was carted off the field in Week 5 — obviously never a good sign. It appears he suffered a significant ankle injury, but we won’t know for sure until he gets X-Rays done. That said, it’s safe to assume he’ll be out for a few weeks at a minimum.

Could New Orleans be a perfect landing spot for trade candidate Marlon Mack? It’s certainly possible, but if the trade does go down, don’t get your hopes up too high for Mack. There hasn’t been as much production behind Alvin Kamara as we’d hoped.
