Draft Preview: Running backs
Broncos in-house offseason moves: Re-signed FB/TE Andrew Beck.
Under contract: Beck (one more year), Javonte Williams (three), Mike Boone (one) and Damarea Crockett (two).
Need scale (1-10): 7. The Broncos need a No. 2 tailback who can share the workload with Williams, who had 203 carries as a rookie. Melvin Gordon remains a free agent and Boone is viewed more as an special teams core player/emergency running back option.
Top Five
1. Breece Hall, Iowa State: Two-time first-team All-America selection following seasons of 1,572 and 1,472 rushing yards. Rushed for at least one touchdown in final 24 games (NCAA record).
2. Kenneth Walker III, Michigan State: Wake Forest transfer who rushed 263 times for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns in lone year for Spartans. Caught only 19 passes in 32 college games.
3. Tyler Allgeier, BYU: Converted linebacker rushed for 1,130 yards/13 TDs and 1,601/23 in two full seasons as tailback. Led FBS last year in carries (276).
4. James Cook, Georgia: Brother of Minnesota Vikings’ Dalvin Cook. Carried only 230 times in 50 games. Capable receiver (67 catches for 730 yards).
5. Brian Robinson, Alabama: Only 24, 62, 96, 91 carries in first four years, but 271 attempts (for 1,343 yards, 14 TDs) as senior. Eight games of at least 20 carries in 2021.
Broncos’ Options
The Broncos don’t have a first-round pick, but do have nine selections. A look at five possibilities:
1. Dameon Pierce, Florida: Didn’t carry more than 106 times in any of four college seasons and 329 in 50 career games (23 touchdowns). Forty-five catches in 50 games.
2. Zamir White, Georgia: Led national champions in rushing last year (160 carries-856 yards-11 TDs). Redshirted in 2018 (torn ACL in fall camp).
3. Rachaad White, Arizona State: College journey was Neb.-Kearney to Mt. San Antonio (Calif.) Junior College to ASU. Averaged 6.4 yards per carry in two years for Sun Devils (20 TDs).
4. Ty Chandler, North Carolina: Transfer from Tennessee took over for Javonte Williams (Broncos), Michael Carter (Jets). Rushed 182 times for 1,092 yards, 13 TDs.
5. Keaontay Ingram, USC: Transfer from Texas who rushed for 911 yards for USC last year. Would be instant contributor as a pass catcher (89 receptions in 42 games).
Saturday: Defensive line.
