Eredivisie star Dost collapses on pitch in terrifying scenes as match suspended

Man Utd reveal Premier League record annual revenue but still make loss

NEC Nijmegen star Bas Dost collapsed on the pitch during the closing stages of his side’s Eredivisie match with AZ Alkmaar on Sunday. Distressed players surrounded him to keep the situation under wraps before paramedics rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance. AZ have already allayed fears by confirming that the 34-year-old is conscious.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), AZ gave a positive update: “Bas Dost is fortunately conscious. Wishing you a lot of recovery and strength, Bas.”

Local reports claimed that he gave a thumbs up from the stretcher as he was carried off the pitch, while receiving a standing ovation from every section of the ground.

AZ were marching up the field in the closing stages of the game but with no player around Dost, he fell to the floor in the centre circle. After the referee was alerted to the incident he stopped the game, which was then suspended, as all attention and thoughts were focused on Dost.

AZ defender David Moller Wolfe went over to Dost who had been lying on the floor, before calling for the physios to enter the pitch quickly as players from both sides gathered around the veteran striker to give him and the medical staff privacy.

NEC goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, formerly of Barcelona, called over players to help cover Dost as they became aware of the severity of the situation.

Players were visibly distressed as they held their heads in their hands, before Dost sent a reassuring message by holding his arm aloft while his name was chanted around the AFAS Stadion.

With NEC minutes away from defeating Dutch giants AZ 2-1 away from home, the game has reportedly been suspended until another day due to the medical emergency.

Dost made 18 appearances for the Netherlands and scored goals all across Europe for the likes of Heerenveen, Wolfsburg, Sporting Lisbon and Club Brugge before returning to his homeland with NEC.
