World No23 star refuses handshake after being beaten by No95 at Indian Wells

A shock upset in the second-round clash between Donna Vekic and Lesia Tsurenko at Indian Wells led to huge uproar and a row over sportsmanship.

With Tsurenko securing a comeback victory of 2-6 6-2 6-2 despite sitting 72 places lower in the official WTA rankings, it didn't seem to go down well with the Croatian.

With Ukrainian Tsurenko approaching the net, she wasn't met by her opponent which led her to look to the umpire in confusion – who raised his hands as if to say he wasn't getting involved.

Tsurenko then passed the net to approach the bench of Vekic with an extended hand, but was completely ignored as the loser packed up her things.

Despite serving more aces, eight double faults played their part for a frustrated Vekic, who had shaken the hand of Tsurenko after beating her last week in Monterrey via retirement.

With fans flocking to social media after spotting the snub, some even called for a fine with the traditional net greeting ignored.

One follower said: "Should be a fine for unsportsperson-like play." A second added: "No need for this kind of behaviour. It's important to show respect.

"It reflects on you as a person & on the sport itself."

A third continued: "Lack of sportsmanship and class. No sympathy for her!"

Tsurenko, 33, has pocketed £4.3million in prize money since turning professional back in 2007, with Vekic claiming an even more impressive £5million at the age of 26.

Unfortunately for the victor, she was not able to face Aryna Sabalenka in the third round due to injury, with Barbora Krejcikova up next for the Belarusian.

With Jessica Pegula also progressing in the tournament, the favourite remains world No.1 Iga Swiatek who has won two of the last four Grand Slam singles tournaments.
