UFC’s Meatball Molly fought sex pest during Subway shift – and saved girl

Offbeat news from the world of sport

British UFC star Meatball Molly has revealed she was once involved in a scrap while working at a sandwich shop – and ended up saving a drunk girl from being trafficked.

Since making her UFC debut in May 2018, Molly McCann has developed a fearsome reputation within the sport, recently defeating Luana Carolina with a spinning back elbow knockout.

Before joining the promotion in her late 20s, the Scouse scrapper worked in a Subway chain to make ends meet, which is reportedly the source of her affectionate nickname "meatball".

And, speaking on the True Geordie podcast about growing up on a diet of Bruce Lee movies, Molly admitted she'd been forced to use her fighting prowess during her time at the sandwich shop when she had spotted a woman in distress.

Molly began the story by explaining how she had been working a night shift in Subway when a girl wandered into the sandwich shop, accompanied by a strange-looking man at five in the morning.

"Some girl's stumbled in and this man's come over and put his arm around her, and I just remember thinking, 'that’s a bit sus, that'," she recalled.

So instead of immediately arming herself with a foot long, Molly tried to ask the stranger who he was and how he had come to know the girl, but she said that these questions provoked a violent reaction.

"He dragged the girl and tried to get her out of the shop… I've run outside to go and get him, and as I've run outside he’s gone to head kick me, and I've leaned back and chopped his leg," she continued.

"I've got my apron on, a little hat, those gloves you make your Subway sandwich in, throwing punches back… And this lad's gone pure Jean-Claude Van Damme, coming at me throwing head kicks."

The situation quickly escalated, and Molly remembered cars pulling up outside the shop after the man called his pals for backup. Thankfully, the police soon arrived and the man was later arrested, with the UFC fighter later learning the true extent of his crimes.

She added: "It turned out he'd basically put date rape in her drink in a nightclub, and then watched her come to Subway. Then he was trying to get her in the car and human traffic her."

And, after being he had been hunted down and picked up by the police, the UFC fighter learnt that the man was deported as an illegal immigrant, leaving her feeling like she had served justice.

"Don't mess with the meatball," she laughed.
