Paige VanZant’s husband Austin Vanderford beaten by underdog in first-round TKO

Paige VanZant's husband, Austin Vanderford, was spectacularly stunned by underdog Aaron Jeffery at Bellator 284 on Friday evening.

Vanderford stepped back into the octagon five months after losing his bid to become middleweight champion. Anthony Adams had been scheduled to face Vanderford – but he had pulled out of the bout leaving Jeffery to step in with just eight days' notice.

It was only Jeffery's second Bellator bout, and he started quickly, landing blows on his more experienced opponent. The finish came in the first round when Jeffery landed an overhand right, dropping Vanderford, before unleashing a flurry of punches on the canvas.

"People know who he is, nobody knows who I am. Hopefully, they do now," Jeffery said after the bell.

Jeffery signed for Bellator in early 2022 after twice failing to make the cut in Dana White's Contender Series. His first bout in his new home came against Fabio Aguiar in June – which he won with a second-round stoppage.

Vanderford had been wary of Jeffery before the bout: "He might not have a number next to his name, but I believe he beat quite a few guys in the top 10 anyways."

It's now VanZant's turn to step into the ring when she faces Clarissa Sigala on Saturday evening under the BKFC umbrella.

Vanderford told The Mirror: "She's going to go out and compete really hard and I'm confident that she'll go out there and get the W on her Saturday night when it's time for her.

"She's worked hard and she's ready to go out there and hurt this girl."
