The Olympic Games will be held in Brisbane, Australia, in 2032 after a unanimous vote on Wednesday morning. The Games were last held in Australia in 2000, with Sydney playing host on that occasion.
Brisbane was formally named as the host city for the 2032 games during a ceremony on Wednesday morning in Tokyo.
The International Olympic Committee member nations voted unanimously for Brisbane, considering it was the only bid in the running.
The games are currently being held in Tokyo, with Paris set to host in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028.
Despite being the only bidder, members of Brisbane’s team had travelled to present their proposal in person. Fans flocked to watch the announcement ceremony on a big screen in the centre of Brisbane.
Early estimates suggest that hosting the games in Brisbane will cost the city £2.6billion.
However, it’s also suggested that it will bring the city £9bn in economic relief.
Brisbane will also host the Paralympic Games.
The current Olympic Games continue to be clouded by uncertainty, with an alarming rise in coronavirus cases leading to suggestions the games could be called off.
On Tuesday, the head of the organising committee for the Tokyo games Toshiro Muto claimed there would be a difficult discussion if cases continued to rise.
At the time of his comments, 68 people associated with the games had tested positive for Covid.
The Toyko games will be played behind closed doors after Tokyo declared a state of emergency earlier in the month.
Muto said: “We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases. So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases,” said Muto.
“We have agreed that based on the coronavirus situation, we will convene five-party talks again. At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”
The games officlally get underway on Friday evening with the Opening Ceremony, but events are currently being held.
Team GB’s bid for a gold medal in football got underway with a 2-0 win over Chile on Wednesday morning.
Reigning gold medalists Team USA suffered an early setback as they went 1-0 down in the first-half of their opening game against Sweden.
