Liam Broady’s WAG steals show as he upsets Wimbledon No4 seed Casper Ruud

There were celebrations on and off Centre Court as Liam Broady produced one of the shocks of Wimbledon so far by dumping out world number four Casper Ruud.

The 29-year-old had to dig deep to fight back from two sets to one down but he clinched a superb 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-0 victory in three hours and 27 minutes.

Ruud had made the finals of the French Open and the US Open during the past 12 months but had no answer to Broady’s mixture of flamboyance and grit, with this win sending the world number 142 through to the third round for a second year in a row.

He was roared on throughout the match by his entourage, which included his photogenic girlfriend Eden Silva, who is also a tennis player. Silva was spotted cheering with delight as her beau celebrated the biggest win of his career on the sport’s most famous court.

Silva is currently 395th in the world – with a career-high of 300 – and is the British number 11. She also has a successful modelling career after being spotted on Instagram, where she has 32,500 followers.

Her account features plenty of shots of herself on and away from the court, plus a few with Broady, with the pair said to have grown close last year before their romance blossomed.

Speaking after the win, Broady said: “When I went to bed last night, I had a think about what I would say if I won and now I don’t know what to say!

“It was a pretty terrifying, exhilarating experience coming out at Centre Court on Wimbledon, but it’s been my dream since I was five years old. I said to my mum this morning, she doesn’t like watching, I’ve already won £80,000 this week so she can chill out.”

He then tweeted: Thank you for all the support. I want to reply to everybody but my phone has gone absolutely mad. Come onnnn. Going to enjoy the win for the rest of the eve then ready to go again for third round tomorrow. What a day.”

Broady will face Denis Shapovalov in the third round on Friday.
