Djokovic detained until Sunday after appeal with Australian Open starting Monday

Novak Djokovic will remain in Australia until at least Sunday after having his Australian visa stripped for a second time on Friday.

The World No.1 will remain in the country, returning to a detention centre as he appeals the decision with his lawyers.

Djokovic had jetted down under to participate in the Australian Open, but after mistakes on his ATD, the Serb has had his visa revoked.

The Open is set to get underway on Monday, the day following Djokovic's appeal to get his visa back to play.

At a hearing which lasted until after 11pm in Melbourne, the tennis star's lawyers expressed concern for his safety and a potential “media circus” when he is detained again at 8am on Saturday.

Djokovic will have an interview with the Australian Border Force at 8am then return to his lawyer's office between 10am-2pm.

The Serbian will then return to detention before his hearing at 9am on Sunday.

Djokovic is currently due to face Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday, if his appeal is successful.

Australia's immigration minister, Alex Hawke, was the man who revoked the visa for the second time.

"Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected," he said in a statement.

"I note the Minister for Immigration's decision in relation to Mr Novak Djokovic's visa.

"I understand that following careful consideration, action has been taken by the Minister to cancel Mr Djokovic's visa held on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so.

"This pandemic has been incredibly difficult for every Australian but we have stuck together and saved lives and livelihoods."
