Jess Eaton and Todd Pannell jockeys’ premiership showdown to be settled at Morphettville
A grandstand finish looms on Saturday as the battle for South Australia’s top jockey and trainer for the metropolitan season is set to go down to the wire.
The season finale was set up with an eight-event card at Morphettville Parks on Friday, followed by Saturday’s nine-race meeting on the main Morphettville track.
The metro day-to-day double header was scheduled after wet weather caused most of the last Saturday’s meeting to be postponed.
Jess Eaton leads Todd Pannell by one victory (63-62) in the race for the jockeys’ top gong, while Michael Hickmott holds a three-win buffer against the Tony and Calvin McEvoy team. Phillip Stokes is two victories behind the McEvoys.
Eaton and Pannell have a strong book of rides on Saturday.
At the time of writing Eaton was expected to pilot Stasia ($4.20), Reynolds ($3.70), Talamo ($4.60), Chosen Blonde ($7.50), Rudimental ($31), Denero ($3.10), Aadelad ($10) and Echoes in Eternity ($5).
Pannell also will see plenty of metres with Samurai Sun ($5.50), Victory Club ($12), Yulong Phelps ($2.40), Exalted Ambition ($12), Master Chum ($6), Octane ($14), Beau Rossa ($3) and Noname Lane ($3.30).
Meanwhile, the John Hickmott-trained Flow Meter, the gallant veteran of 168 starts which included 17 wins and 46 placings, has been retired after finishing fifth in the last race at Morphettville Parks on Friday.
