Tiger Woods intervenes to help Rory McIlroy after spotting problem with swing
Rory McIlroy in a ‘good place’ for Masters bid after ‘breakthrough’ last year
Tiger Woods has intervened to help Rory McIlroy following a recent tough run of form for the Northern Irishman ahead of this week’s PGA Championship. McIlroy headed into the opening major of the year at last month’s Masters as a well-backed favourite.
His week at Augusta was one to forget though after missing the 36-hole cut, shooting five-over-par across the opening two days. One week later, McIlroy then opted to skip the RBC Heritage – his second elevated event withdrawal of the season, leading to a £2.4 million sanction.
The Northern Irishman was back in action at this month’s Wells Fargo Championship, but could only secure a top 50 finish as he continued to hunt for the form he showed throughout 2022. McIlroy will be hoping his a-game returns this week ahead of the second major of the season.
And it appears the four-time major champion has help from the very best in a bid to get back to the top. According to Golf Channel, McIlroy sat down with good friend, and golfing great Tiger Woods to discuss his swing.

The report suggests Woods reached out to McIlroy after noticing a slight flaw in the Northern Irishman’s technique. The 33-year-old has not only been struggling with the physical side of his game, but the mental aspect too.
Speaking on his Wells Fargo Championship return, McIlroy cited he needed time away from the course for ‘mental and emotional well-being’. He told Golf Channel: “More for my mental and emotional well-being I needed to be at home for those few weeks.

“I think I’m in a better head space than I was. I needed a break. Obviously, after the disappointment of Augusta, and it’s been a pretty taxing 12 months mentally, so it was nice to just try to disconnect and get away from it.”
Keen to get going at an event and course that is close to his heart on Thursday, he commented: “I am excited to go back to Oak Hill. From the last time I was there or we were all there, my connection to Rochester’s got a lot stronger. So I’m excited to go and play a Major championship in what feels like almost a second home to me.”
