Five F1 2024 seats available after Red Bull update including Lewis Hamilton’s

Lewis Hamilton is now one of just five drivers yet to sort their whereabouts for the 2024 season following a busy week in the driver market. The British driver is out of contract at the end of the season and his future has been the subject of much speculation.

With the Dutch Grand Prix approaching, the driver market seems to have kicked into gear with Red Bull and Haas both making moves to confirm their driver line-up for next season.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner told Speedcafe that Sergio Perez’s place with the team is secure for next season despite his struggles in the build-up to the summer break. He said: “We have a contract. We’re happy with Checo and he will be our driver next year.”

Haas, meanwhile, have announced that both Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg have signed new, one-year contract extensions with the team, meaning that they will be retaining the same driver pairing for 2024.

With two more seats therefore taken off the market, only five drivers are yet to confirm their place on the grid. Of those five, three are almost certain to be on the grid next year with Hamilton as well as the AlphaTauri duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda both expected to sign new deals.

Hamilton’s contract saga has dominated the headlines all summer with a switch to Ferrari speculated, but the seven-time world champion is expected to renew with Mercedes for at least another two years.

Ricciardo made his return to the grid ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, replacing Nyck de Vries, and is expected to beat Liam Lawson to the second seat for 2024 as Red Bull continue to assess him as an option to replace Checo at the end of his deal next season. Tsunoda’s contract extension is a matter of when not if.

Of the remaining two seats, both look set to be decided between two candidates. Zhou Guanyu is the favourite to retain his seat with Alfa Romeo for another season, but with Sauber junior driver Theo Pourchaire leading the F2 standings, this saga will likely drag on throughout the autumn.

This leaves Logan Sargeant’s seat at Williams. Alex Palou has been linked to a switch to Williams, but Mick Schumacher is believed to be the team’s most likely replacement for the American rookie should he fail to convince James Vowles that he warrants another season at the pinnacle of motorsport.
