Sports stars are capable of blocking out all the noise at the most crucial moments, and Collin Morikawa has revealed how he was almost derailed by a fart noise on the final tee at The Open.

Morikawa, 24, put in a near flawless 72 holes of golf to lift his second major at Sandwich last Sunday, holding off challenges from Jordan Spieth and Louis Oosthuizen to triumph in Kent.

Heading into the final hole, the American held a two-stroke lead over Spieth, knowing that anything other than a spectacular capitulation would result in him winning the Claret Jug.

Morikawa was seen stepping away from the tee on the 18th hole, with fans wondering whether the American was feeling overawed by the magnitude of the occasion before him.

However, the 24-year-old has revealed how he needed to recalibrate after being put off by a bizarre farting noise emanating from the crowd.

‘Some spectator, at some point in the day, snuck a little old school microphone, like a recording. Threw it underneath one of the marshals around there and started playing these farting noises right as I was about to swing,’ Morikawa told Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take podcast.

Morikawa said he and Louis Oosthuizen shared a laugh as marshals sought to find the device

However, the 24-year-old kept his cool to win his second major title after a flawless week

‘Louis [Oosthuizen], his caddie, my caddie, we all knew it was a farting noise. But we seriously thought it was from the spectators. We thought someone was playing it on their phone.

‘The marshals were all looking, we’re looking around, the marshal digs in the grass and pulls this little recorder out. What’re the odds of that happening?’

Fortunately for Morikawa, he was unmoved by the chicanery at the 18th, hitting a crisp tee shot down the right hand side of the fairway before coolly making par to clinch a famous victory.

The 24-year-old’s triumph at Sandwich is his second major, having won the US PGA Championship behind closed doors in 2020.
