England’s eventual 432 was their highest total in 16 innings, dating back to early February, when they began their tour of India with 578 at Chennai.

Since 2007, they have scored more in a Headingley Test only once, when they made 490 for eight declared against West Indies in 2017 – a game the tourists went on to win when they chased down 322 in the fourth innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara brought up his first Test fifty in 13 innings stretching back to February. It was only his fourth score of 50 or more in 26 Test innings in England.
