Pakistan Super League suspended after COVID outbreak with Fawad Ahmed sick

The Pakistan Super League was suspended on Thursday after seven coronavirus cases came to light, the country’s cricket board said.

One of the cases is Pakistan-born Australian leg spinner Fawad Ahmed after the 39-year-old’s positive test saw a match postponed.

But the outbreak has worsened with England batsman Tom Banton also coming down with the disease.

The Twenty20 competition, which started on February 20, was put on hold “with immediate effect”, a Pakistan Cricket Board statement said.

“The decision was made after seven cases were reported in the competition,” a statement on the Pakistan Cricket Board website said.

The PCB “will focus on the safe and secure passage of all participants, and arrange repeat PCR tests, vaccines and isolation facilities to the six participating sides.”.

There are several Australians playing in the league with Ben Dunk, Ben Cutting, Chris Lynn and Dan Christian all featuring in the competition.

Ahmed took to social media earlier in the week to thank all those who had sent on their well wishes.

Thanks for all the kind messages, please keep remember me in ur prayers, much needed ?? @IsbUnited@thePSLt20, and please everyone stay safe ??

“One of our players, Fawad Ahmed tested positive … and was immediately put in isolation two days ago,” the club said in a statement.

“The player had showed symptoms two days ago and had been immediately isolated. Members of his side have tested negative while the players of the other side are being tested.

“Test results of both Quetta Gladiators and Islamabad United squads have come back negative. This is being done to ensure players from both sides get time to prepare for the game.”

Ahmed’s PSL team, Islamabad United, revealed he had tested positive and that the game was rescheduled for Tuesday with the side defeating Quetta Gladiators.
